Northwestern Atlantic Walrus

Walrus (Obobenus rosmarus) were once common along the coasts of Eastern Canada, Walrus_picparticularly on Sable Island and the Magdalene Islands. However, by the mid-1700s the group that once inhabited this region was extirpated and no longer remains. Over the past 25 years a large number of cranial elements have been collected from Sable Island. We are using these bones to examine duration of occupancy, and the morphological and genetic characteristics of this group.
